Creed III marks the return of Adonis Creed and brings the popular boxing franchise to its third installment, with Michael B. Jordan stepping into a new role behind the camera while reprising his lead performance.
Jordan once again stars as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, the son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed. After stepping away from the ring to focus on family life with his wife Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson, Donnie’s carefully built peace is disrupted when Damian Anderson, a former childhood friend and once-promising boxing prodigy, reenters his life following a lengthy prison sentence. Damian, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, challenges Donnie both personally and professionally, forcing him to confront unresolved conflicts from his past.
Creed III is significant for several reasons. It is Michael B. Jordan’s feature directorial debut and the first film in the Rocky franchise to move forward without Sylvester Stallone appearing on screen as Rocky Balboa. However, Stallone remains attached as a producer. Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin wrote the screenplay.
In addition to Jordan, Thompson, and Majors, the film features returning cast members Wood Harris as trainer Tony “Little Duke” Burton, Florian Munteanu as Viktor Drago, and Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne Creed. Newcomer Mila Davis-Kent makes her feature film debut as Amara, Donnie and Bianca’s daughter.
Release Date and Theatrical Run
Creed III was released exclusively in theaters on March 3, 2023, with select IMAX screenings beginning earlier in the week. At 116 minutes, it is the shortest film in the trilogy and the first sports movie shot with IMAX cameras.
