The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has released new data showing the continued spread of COVID-19 throughout the state’s correctional system, with confirmed cases reported at 22 correctional facilities.
Among the affected institutions is Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Westchester County. DOCCS reports that 44 inmates at Sing Sing have tested positive for the virus, with three inmate deaths recorded to date. The facility is one of the state’s most well known prisons, historically associated with some of the nation’s most notorious criminals and frequently referenced in popular culture.
Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison near the Buffalo area, has reported 23 confirmed inmate cases. In the region, Marcy Correctional Facility has recorded seven positive cases, while Attica Correctional Facility has reported one.
Fishkill Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Dutchess County, currently has the highest number of confirmed cases in the DOCCS system, with 46 inmates testing positive for COVID-19.
According to DOCCS, more than 1,000 cases have been identified across its prison and parole system statewide. The latest figures show 794 employees, 211 inmates, and 32 parolees testing positive for the virus.
Additional inmate cases have been reported at Bedford Hills with 21, Green Haven with 18, Otisville and Shawangunk with eight each, Eastern and Great Meadow with seven each, Southport and Midstate with seven and five respectively. Facilities reporting a single positive inmate case include Clinton, Coxsackie, Downstate, Franklin, Mohawk/Walsh RMU, Queensboro, Taconic, Ulster, and Wallkill.
DOCCS officials continue to monitor the situation and update case counts as testing and reporting continue across the state correctional system.
