James M. Erb, 19, of Castile and Tyler F. Carpenter, 18, of Portageville were arrested Tuesday as a result of a multi- jurisdictional investigation.
The Livingston and Wyoming County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the New York State Police, have been working together to solve these incidents, which have been occurring in Southern Livingston, Northern Allegany, and Eastern Wyoming Counties since early this past summer.
According to a press release, the suspects would intentionally target seasonal homes and other structures in remote areas where the owners were not likely to reside. Among the stolen items were firearms, ammunition, hunting gear, motorcycles, generators and clothing.
Significant damage was also reported to many of these homes.
Undersheriff James Szczesniak advises that a third suspect was identified as a juvenile, interviewed and released to a parent. Charges are forthcoming on that suspect, but the issue will be handled in Family Court due to the age of the offender.
Many stolen items were recovered from the suspects, including guns. Investigators will be working with known victims in an attempt to identify all the items recovered.
Erb and Carpenter were arraigned on Burglary charges before Town Justice Mann in Nunda and remanded to the Livingston County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Additional charges are expected once the investigation is concluded.
