GROVELAND – Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Wayland, NY man after Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a motor vehicle crash. On October 24, 2018 at approximately 8:25 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Groveland Hill Road in the Town of Groveland for a single car motor vehicle crash. Sergeant Ryan Swanson was first on scene and found that a vehicle being operated by 26 year old Andrew J.
Mehlenbacher was traveling on Groveland Hill Road when he left the roadway and struck multiple vehicles that were parked in a driveway.
It was suspected that Mehlenbacher may have been under the influence of drugs. Deputy Matthew Thomas, who is assigned to the Sheriff’s Office STOP DWI Unit, responded to the scene to conduct a DWI investigation which included the performance of standardized field
sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the roadside investigation, Mehlenbacher was taken into custody for DWAI Drugs.

Mehlenbacher was then transported to the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in Geneseo where Sheriff’s Sergeant James Merrick, a Certified Drug Recognition Expert, conducted a drug evaluation. It was the Sergeant’s expert opinion that Mehlenbacher was under the influence of
a narcotic analgesic and cannabis and could not operate a vehicle safely. Mehlenbacher was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by a Combination of Drugs, violations of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd degree as his driving privileges had been suspended four (4) times.
Mehlenbacher was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention.
Mehlenbacher was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the Livingston County Jail before Town of Groveland Justice Jeanean Love. The Judge released Mehlenbacher on his own recognizance (ROR).
