Raymond ‘Bud’ Greiner Merrill, 83, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 28, 2017) at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, Calif. He was born on Feb. 21, 1933 in Wayland, N.Y. to Raymond B. and Helma C. (Greiner) Merrill.
Bud grew up in Atlanta and Naples, N.Y. He graduated from Wayland Central School in 1950. After high school, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he received a Bachelor’s in Agricultural Science. Two weeks after graduation, he was drafted into the Army in 1954 and served for two years. He was stationed at Fort Lee, Va. and at the Ingrandes QM Depot in France where he met his future wife. He began work in the furniture industry for W.H. Gunlocke Chair Company in Wayland in various positions, then moved to Whittier as Branch Plant manager. His employment with The Gunlocke Company spanned 25 years. He continued to work faithfully in the furniture business for the next 35 years as a project coordinator for Corry Hiebert, Hon Industries, and Office Depot/Office Max.
Bud married Monique Monnot in 1958 in Wayland. They were happily married for 59 years. Bud was a member of East Whittier Presbyterian Church, and the Lions Club and Whittier Chamber of Commerce when he managed the Gunlocke Plant. He was a true Renaissance man and jack of all trades, including car repair, home improvements, tailoring and carpentry. He was an avid musician and enjoyed singing, playing and performing in many venues, including church, community theaters and family gatherings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Helma; and his sisters, Mary Jean Merrill and Betty June (Herb) Wells.
Bud is survived by his spouse, Monique of Whittier; his daughter, Marie-Noelle (Alex) Palermo of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter, Nathalie Merrill of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter, Dr. Veronique (Michael) Merrill-Warner of La Verne, Calif.; his grandchildren, Nicolas (Elyse), Trinity, Whitney, Jeremy, Miranda and Valerie; his great-grandchildren, Ella and Greyson; his nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at East Whittier Presbyterian Church, 14061 E. Second Street, Whittier, Calif., 90605 at 10:30 a.m., Feb. 25, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held following the service at noon in the Church Fellowship Hall.
