AVON – This coyote has been making the rounds near Rochester Street for the past few weeks, raising eyebrows and some concerns as residents continue to report sightings.
Micah and Anna Vitale have lived on Rochester Street for 3 years and have never seen or heard sightings of a coyote in the Village. They took the above and below videos with an iPhone from their backyard on Monday morning between 9 and 9:30 a.m.
“We watched him for a good 15 to 20 minutes. As shown in the video, he went north towards Reed Street and up Reed Street behind houses on the right side,” said Anna Vitale. “It’s offputting to see it here in general! The only strange thing was how often he would sit down. For awhile, he would sit and as you can see he did scratch a lot but his temperament didn’t seem sickly in regard to his energy when darting after whatever he went for in the woods.”
Avon Police Chief Gary Benedict said that his officers have responded to calls of sightings but so far have not made contact with the coyote.
“We’ve been hearing reports for a couple weeks, but by the time we get there, he’s long gone,” said Chief Benedict. “You rarely get close to them at all. So far there’s not a lot of concern. [Coyotes are] all over the place outside of the Village, it’s just kind of unusual to see one on Rochester Street.”
The Vitales said that they are not concerned about the coyote and wish it all the best.
“We have a five year old daughter but no immediate concerns,” said Anna Vitale. “Hoping it turns out well for the animal and he just high tails it back to where he came from.”
The Vitales ventured into the backyard to take the photo below for scale.
