CONESUS – An apparently renegade vehicle has robbed Ricky Greene Memorial Park of its annual Christmas decorations.
Conesus Town Supervisor Brenda Donahue said that the decorations come courtesy of local kids and the Conesus Fire Department, who come together every year to set up little Santas, reindeer, snowmen, candy canes, and a baby Jesus and Mary under lawn spotlights.
“It seems we had a bit of a Grinch in our park,” said Conesus Town Supervisor Brenda Donahue. “They just ran over everything they could and left very deep ruts. The kids and our Park Director Hazel DeLaney take pride in those decorations, and don’t get paid a nickel. What a shame that this happened.”
Neighbors to the park make a point of checking on it every night to be on the lookout for mischief. One neighbor, a Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputy, checks it when returning from late light shifts. All was apparently well at about 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Donahue added that volunteers are disheartened by the destruction and may not be able to repair everything by Christmas.
“The volunteers take great pride in the decorations and they work hard to set them up,” said. “This is just awful. Very discouraging. The volunteers aren’t even sure if they want to put them up again at this point. But we’ll see.”
The Town is assisting an active Livingston County Sheriff’s Office investigation by providing an estimate of financial damage to the park.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (585)243-7100.
