GENESEO — The Genesee Valley Conservancy held it’s 11th annual Oak Tree Half Marathon and 5k as runners and nature enthusiasts gathered to support fitness and the Genesee Valley Conservancy.
The half marathon was won by Kiplingat Tisia, 26, with a time of 1:11:46, just off of his course record set the previous year. Floridian Jessica Kennedy, 37, won the women’s even with a time of 1;30:51 on one of the most challenging half marathon courses in the northeast.
“I love running in Livngston County,” said Tisia, who donated the red oak tree to a community member that contributes to the running community. “Running is a sport that is built on community and passion and that’s why running in Genesee Valley is so special.”
The recipients of Tisia’s winning Oak Tree were Tom and Deb Jerris, who are members of South of the Thruway Running Club and host multiple running events and social gatherings at their home on Conesus Lake. The epic 250 feet of elevation over 1 mile on Nations Road at mile 10 has been named “Mount Tom Jerris” in recognition of his will to climb any mountain.
The men’s 5k was won by local runner Evan Magnussen, 21, with a time of 16:28 and Melissa Senall, 43, won the women’s race with a time of 19:26.
Catherine Staley, 8, once again continues to impress as the brilliant strider ran 22:11, at a pace of 7:09/mile and 9th overall. Bob Lonsberry and his daughter Hannah ran the entire race for the 2nd year together as a father daughter team.
