GENESEO – A spectacular year just got better for SUNY Geneseo senior Alexa Wandy, who was named the NCAA Division III Track & Field Women’s Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Wandy won the title after sweeping the long jump and triple jump events to win a pair of national titles at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by North Central (IL.), last week.
In Saturday’s triple jump competition, second-seeded Wandy posted five of the six longest performances on the day, including a championship meet record 41-5 3/4 (12.64m) on her final jump that was nearly a foot better than runner-up Amber Williams from Wisconsin-Platteville.
Seeded sixth for Friday’s long jump event, Wandy posted a career-best mark of 19 feet, 6 1/4 inches (5.95m) on her sixth and final jump, besting runner-up Asia Greene (19-5 1/4 – 5.92) from George Fox by an inch.
Now a five-time All-American, Wandy also posted runner-up finishes in the triple jump at last year’s NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Her long jump showing came in her first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the event.
