GENESEO – A minor garbage can fire in the bathroom at Walmart turned into an arson investigation and a felony arrest.
According to a press release from Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian, Jacob Hicks, 37, was arrested for felony Attempted Arson in the Second Degree.
“Walmart put the fire out before the Geneseo Fire Department even arrived,” said Osganian. “But getting more into it, they felt that it was intentionally set, and the investigation continued from there.”
The fire was on Jan. 30 and just caused a smoke condition in the building. Hicks is a Portage resident.
The Geneseo Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler and the Geneseo Fire Department, and Kevin Niedermaier of the Livingston County Emergency Management Office.
Geneseo Justice Kathleen Houston remanded Hicks to the Livingston County Jail without bail due to prior felony convictions.
