GENESEO – A surge in the tax base in the Village of Geneseo could completely cover the Village’s municipal costs.
Mayor Richard Hatheway said that the 2016-2017 budget year could have municipal costs completely accounted for by the increased tax revenue.
“We are going to meet in a couple of weeks, on February 24th,” said Hatheway. “I did point out in the letter [to department heads] that as a result of our increase in tax base by $2.5 million, using the present tax rate, that amounts to $17,000 dollars, and I can imagine that has probably eaten up municipal costs.”
However, Hatheway added that the budget will have to carefully account for other costs.
“We have an increase in the debt service line by about $105,000, and then if we keep talking about the school resource officer there’s another $10,000,” said Hatheway. “We have to find a way to find $115,000.”
The Village’s meeting on Feb. 24 at the Village building at 119 Main Street will be open to the public.
Hatheway added that Election Day is March 15, and this is the first time the Board will have a regular meeting the night before the election.
The public hearing for the budget will be in early April.
