Community support is needed for BAHR to win an ASPCA grant of up to $25,000 to help save more horses. Horses have been central to the ASPCA’s work since its founding 150 years ago, when Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for the mistreatment of a horse on April 26, 1866. In honor of the ASPCA’s 150th anniversary celebration this year, the contest has been expanded to include a total of $100,000 in grant prizes, including a grand prize of $25,000. This contest is only open to certified 501c-3 charity organizations. As such, all contributions will be tax deductible. Begin Again Horse Rescue will enter their “Team Up For Horses” campaign that could enable them to expand their efforts to rehabilitate and rehome horses in need.
All funds raised this month will be used for a new program called Raveman’s Gelding Crusade that will assist in gelding stallions to prevent unnecessary breeding and overpopulation of horses within a 2 hour radius of the BAHR home in Lima, as one of the leading problems facing the equine population is overbreeding.
The program’s spokesman – Rave the Miniature Horse, AKA Raveman – a rescue that was previously gelded and adopted, is helping to promote the BAHR “Team Up For Horses” campaign at various nearby sites. On Saturday, April 16, he will be at the Canandaigua Runnings store from 10 – 1 and the Farmington Countrymax from 2 – 5.
The rescue is also running an Upstate NY Gelding of the Year Photo Contest to raise funds for the Raveman’s Gelding Crusade. Entries close April 15 at 10 p.m. and voting ends April 17th. Entries cost $5 and there is a $1 per vote charge. Entries and votes are tax deductible. See entries and vote here.
The funds raised from Jeanne Smith’s Round Pen Rendezvous on April 2nd are also going for this project.
The culminating event is April 24th from 10 – 4 at BAHR, 2828 Plank Road (Route 15), Lima, NY, where there will be a “kid’s corral”, Raveman color contest, guest speakers on a variety of horse topics, food, fun and more! Again, complete details are on the BAHR website.
