GENESEO – The National Warplane Museum in Geneseo USA TODAY’s ranked as America’s 6th most popular airshow.
According to a press release from the National Warplane Museum, airshows from across the nation were nominated by USA TODAY readers, and the list was narrowed down to the final 20 by two experts. These 20 airshows, held throughout the country, were then voted on by fans to produce a Top Ten list.
“This is exciting and encouraging news for all of us,” said Austin Wadsworth, President of the National Warplane Museum. “We all work very hard to provide an entertaining and memorable Airshow weekend experience for the entire family. To have this Top Ten recognition from our fans and peers shows us that we are still providing a competitive, interactive experience. This experience is enjoyed by the community around us, and the national and international audience we bring to the Western NY and Finger Lakes region.”
The National Warplane Museum Airshow is held every July over a three-day span and typically has an average of 70 vintage aircraft on the field for families to tour, get up close to and interact with the pilots.
The 2016 airshow was July 8, 9 and 10. Famous aircraft and pilots swarm to the airfield on Big Tree Road to perform and go on static display.
One of the Museum’s treasures, Whiskey 7, which flew combat missions on D-Day, was joined by the F4U4 ‘Corsair Korean War Hero,’ which flew over 200 combat missions in Korea. A Mig-17F flew jet aerobatics, and world-renowned aerobatics pilot Rob Holland performed death-defying maneuvers over the crowd.
Old favorites include the Focke Wulf FW-190, MIG 17 jet, P-51 Mustang Quicksilver, and B25 Panchito.
World War II reenactors set up historically accurate camps for visitors to walk through, layering the historical experience for all. Reenactors demonstrate the infantry gear, weapons and tactics of the period.
“The National Warplane Museum Airshow, held just last week in Geneseo, NY not only made the Top Ten list, but came in as the #6 airshow in the entire country,” said the Museum in their release. “There were some strong, heavy hitting competitors in the lineup, but the 36-year reputation of the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ held strong.”
On top of this, the National Warplane Museum has a lot to offer besides the annual airshow. The Museum’s displays are open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3489 Big Tree Lane in Geneseo.
