Twitter’s official status report, status.twitter.com, said at about 8:30 P.M. that that some users are currently having trouble signing in to Twitter, and that their engineers are currently working to resolve this. However, many social media users and capable techies are saying the site may have crashed due to a failed transition into the new year.
According to hacker “lechatleon” through news.ycombinator.com, a hacker news site, they were able to use a “man in the middle attack” (MITM) to discover that the date in the login communication between Twitter and Android is erroneously set as Monday, Dec. 29, 2015.
Social media users are giving mixed reports whether Twitter has crashed on their Androids, iPhones, Macs, and PCs. It seems that some users are still able to access Twitter normally.
It is unclear whether an internal Twitter error or an outside cyber attack has led to the situation.
Twitter has made no official statement on the incident.
