GENESEO – The historic bear fountain on Main Street was struck and destroyed by a tractor trailer Thursday morning.
The fountain and its iconic bronze bear were knocked down at about 6:07 a.m., and the driver of the tractor trailer was transported to the hospital.
“At this point, it appears to have been operator error,” said Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian. “We are still conducting a thorough investigation.”
Fortunately, local historical societies keep thorough records of the fountain and its bronze bear, Emmeline, so that she can be reconstructed.
