One of the few sports not to be postponed by the onrush of COVID-19 is trout fishing season. The season began officially earlier this week with anglers practicing safe social distancing (which is kind of an integral part of successful trout fishing anyway). To this the state Department of Environmental Conservation says the public is more than welcome to take part.
Behind the scenes is the effort of the restocking of fresh fish. This year, because of the virus, no volunteers were used to help put in our waters approximately 15,000 browns, rainbows and brook trout in upstate NYs county streams, lakes and ponds prior to the season opener. The total stocking goal for the entire season opener is around 73,000 fish. Stocking for Livingston, Monroe and Ontario follow.
Meanwhile, state fishing licenses are available online through the DEC’s website or by phone (1-866-933-2257).
According to DEC they already have stock 380 rainbow trout in Nuda’s Newville Creek, 4,000 n Springer Creek, and 900 brook trout in Sugar Creek within Livingston County.
