Trail Otter announced Tuesday it has launched their newest hiking challenge in Letchworth State Park. Participating hikers in the Hike Letchworth: Hiked ‘Em All Challenge will complete 74 miles of open trails in the 14,427 acre park. Sign up is available on their website.
How many people can say they hiked all 29 Letchworth State Park hiking trails? “Not many,” said Bill Waterhouse, one of Trail Otter’s licensed guides. “Hiking all 74 miles of beautifully maintained trails involves lots of elevation and always changing conditions.”
Trail Otter started the challenge to get people outside and explore the “Grand Canyon of the East.”. Much of the park, especially the more rustic east side, is underutilized and just as awe inspiring as the waterfall areas. Providing hikers an incentive to explore the entire park is the goal, and Trail Otter looks forward to hearing stories that are sure to be generated by the challenge. Once hikers complete the challenge they receive a snazzy completion patch.
The challenge is also a fundraiser for two organizations that keep Letchworth’s trails in great shape. Waterhouse added “Most people don’t realize Letchworth State Park trails are maintained by volunteers from two non-profit organizations, the Friends of Letchworth State Park (FOLSP) & Finger Lakes Trail Conference (FLTC), along with park staff.” A large portion of the challenge’s twenty dollar fee goes to support these two non-profits.
