A large part of my cycling exploits are spent managing the Livingston Cycling Club and the Once Again Nut Butter Race Team. This is our team’s first year, during which we have had a tremendous amount of success. We sponsor 17 riders who compete in a mix of triathlons, road bike races, and mountain bike races.

Although triathlons and road bike races are certainly more popular locally, and those athletes make up the bulk of our team, one of our riders competes in the unique sport of downhill mountain bike racing. Chad Meyerhoefer, a Livonia graduate who now lives in Eastern Pennsylvania where he is a Professor of Economics at Leigh University, is Once Again’s sole DH racer.
Although DH riding and racing is not popular locally, this may be changing as Swain Ski Resort has been opening the lift service about once a month for the past two summers. Additionally this year, on August 25-26, Swain will be hosting a Gravity East race, which will feature both professional and amateur racers.
Chad will be racing in that event after coming off a podium finish at the USA Cycling National Championships in Beech Mt., NC and two weeks of riding and training at Whistler Mt in British Columbia.
I traveled with Chad last week to the National Championships where I got a first-hand account of the DH culture at it’s highest level. For a closer look at this exciting aspect of cycling, watch my video blog.
