PERRY/AVON — The American Rock Salt Race Series and the Livingston County Cycling Club are hosting two days of racing featuring beginners and top amateur cyclists from all over the East Coast and Canada.
The weekend kicks off July 21 at Perry-Warsaw Airport, which offers one of the best courses for both fans and cyclists. In addition to watching the exciting races, fans will also be able to enjoy beer from Silver Lake Brewing and the Amber Lantern, food from Vertical Cafe and Smokin’ in the Valley BBQ as well as expos, music, announcing and crowd games.
The racers will then return for a second day of competition on Sunday July 22 to Avon where beginners will race 20 miles and elite racers will race 80 miles, doing multiple laps through downtown.
“These guys are on $5,000 – $10,000 bikes that weigh 15-17 pounds, and they will hit 40 mph,” said event director Tony Sylor about the Elite Racers. “Many have raced in the biggest races in the country. Some are young up-and-comers looking to make a name while others are seasoned elite amateurs and retired professions.”
While racers are competing, other riders will be enjoying the Rock Gran Fondo as they tour the beautiful roads of Livingston County on a non-competitive ride that features, Conesus Lake, a rest stop at Deer Run Winery, and offers rides options of 25 miles, 60 miles or 90 miles. Fondo riders and racers will start and end on Genesee St. where there will be food trucks, music and awards.
