GENESEO — The Geneseo men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to nationally ranked St. Lawrence on a cloudy Saturday afternoon.
The team came out flat and fell behind early as a strong St Lawrence side continued to put pressure on the ball and opposing net leading at the half 2-0.
“We came out timid against a formidable opponent and they took advantage of it,” said coach Oliveri when talking about the first half.
The second half saw a much more competitive Geneseo team take the field, and both teams started creating chances. Ryan Yurchak was able to capitalize on one of those opportunities 20 minutes into the half, creating enough space just outside the penalty area to strike a laser of a shot past the goal keeper. Bringing the score to 2-1 and giving the home team a confidence boost.
The #3 ranked squad responded as a favorite should, and created a number of opportunities that culminated in a goal off a corner kick with just six minutes left that essentially put a dagger in the Knights’ comeback attempt.
The team now holds a (1-3) record and has a week to improve before traveling to play Ithaca next Sunday.
