GENESEO — As the 2012 fall sports season approaches, both the Geneseo men’s and women’s soccer teams look to build on successful campaigns from 2011.
The girls squad, lead by head coach Nate Wiley, is looking to rebuild after a season in which they finished 14-4-2. The team made it to the second round of their conference tournament before being knocked out by the top ranked Cortland Lady Dragons.
“I like the mix of young talent and experienced leaders we have,” said coach Nate Wiley.
The Lady Knights graduated eight starters from that team and will now look to new faces for contributions this year. The team is welcoming back their starting Goalie, Julia Sanger and All Conference defender Olivia Panepinto to help secure the back line, but much of the offensive effort will have to come from the youngsters. Senior captains Shannon Spusta and Stephanie Verdino will provide the leadership for this young team with plenty of reloaded talent.
The men’s team also had to replace eight starters on a team that last year finished third in a conference that sent two schools to Nationals. After winning a home game in the opening round of the conference tournament, they fell victim to top ranked SUNY Brockport to finish with a record of 9-7-2. Now, coach Dominic Oliveri looks to reload with a talented freshman class.
“We are young, but very talented,” said coach Oliveri.
Neil Allen, a returning sophomore, is the only returning player that earned an All Conference selection from a year ago. He also brings together a talented back line to work alongside senior captains Nick Voggel, in goal, and defender Rob Loccisano.
The other captain, Alex Stephan, resides in the midfield and will be a main distributor to Allen, along with Division 1 transfer, Jason Lannone, up front.
Look for the men’s game this Friday, at 4pm, as they host Clarkson, while the Lady Knights travel to Fredonia to take on Allegheny at 2:30.
