BUFFALO – The Geneseo Knights men’s basketball team defeated the Buffalo State Bengals 78-72 in Buffalo Tuesday evening as senior forward Gordon Lyons scored 33 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season.
Lyons was one point shy of the career high 34 points he scored against Medaille on December 8 and 20 of his points came during the first half. Senior forward Andy Drescher had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and senior forward James McKenna also finished with 13 points.
“In most ways, it was a very good defensive performance for us,” said Knights Head Coach Steve Minton. “Gordon was a gladiator all night, and so was the rest of the team down the stretch. We found some big rebounds in the final minutes to win our third-straight on the road. Now hopefully we can do it at home.”
The Knights played somewhat sloppily in the second half and turned the ball over a total of 13 times in the final 20 minutes. The Knights’ defensive performance kept the Bengals at bay as they were held to 7-of-38 (18.4%) shooting.
The Knights are now 12-8 overall (8-5 SUNYAC) and the Bengals are 13-8 overall (9-6 SUNYAC).
The Knights will host the New Paltz Hawks on Friday, February 13 at 5:30p.m., before taking on the visiting Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, February 14 at 2p.m.
