SUN VIDEO: ‘RKids’ Backs Geneseo’s Bright, Low-Income Schoolkids

GENESEO – Kids in low-income housing areas are welcome to a community-driven after school program at St. Michael’s Church.

Rev. William Daniel Jr. says that ‘RKids’ started a year ago as the brainchild of local resident Tom Bushnell and has since blossomed into a partnership between the church, Geneseo Central School and SUNY Geneseo.

Geneseo Central School counselor Beki Kaye, AmeriCorps VISTA Jessie Gyr, and many college interns hang out with students in grades 4 to 6 who live in four targeted low-income housing areas in Geneseo. After routine homework and reading time, the kids enjoy group activities designed and conducted by interns.

A Geneseo Central School bus takes them to and from the church every day.

Plans are in motion to expand this and start other programs to engage these low-income areas with the rest of the Village.
