YORK — The 2017 Region 15 and 16 Odyssey of the Mind Tournament took place in York with 10 schools and over 200 students competing in creatively fueled competition after months of hard work and planning.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Teams of students from a school select a problem, create a solution, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. There are multiple problems in a tournament.
A team’s standing in competition is determined by its combined long-term score, style score, and spontaneous score.
Geneseo will be sending 12 teams to compete in states and York will have 3. Caledonia-Mumford, Attica and Livonia will also be sending 1 team.
This year there were 6 different problems or challenges that schools competed in:
Problem 1: Catch us if You Can – teams design, build, and run vehicles from a multi-level parking garage to a secret meeting place without being stopped.
Problem 2: Odd-a-Bot – teams create a humorous story about a family the brings him an “Odd-a-Bot.” Team will design build, and operate an original robot that demonstrates human characteristics when performing a task.
Problem 3: It’s Time OMER – The future and the past collide in this problem about important works of art – both existing and yet-to-be-created. Teams will create and present an original performance about time travelers looking to discover the inspiration for great works of art, little did they know – it was OMER every time.
Problem 4: Ready, Set, Balsa, Build! – In this problem teams will design, build, and test a structure made of only balsa wood and glue that will balance and support as much weight as possible.
Problem 5: A Superhero Cliffhanger – Teams will create and present a humorous performance about an unexpected superhero that encounters three different situations where they must save creativity in some way.
Problem 6: Movin’ Out! – Teams will create and present a performance about a group that is moving out of one place and into another.

York participants.
At the regional level, teams move on to compete at the state Tournament that will be hosted in Binghamton later this year. If they win the State title, they move on to compete in the world competition, a prestigious honor in itself.
