Anyone seeking an exemption or reduction in taxes must get the paperwork in to the town assessor’s office by March 1, under the state’s tax abatement program. Assessments for property tax bills are made by town assessors based on like value of similar properties, but there is an opportunity for some to get reduced property taxes, under special circumstances.
The March 1 deadline applies to anyone seeking a reduced tax. For instance, farmers can get an agriculture exemption on their property if they meet income guidelines, but that also reduces services such as publi water, lighting, sewers, etc. If the property is sold before the 7-year ag district registration is ended, all discounted taxes must be paid back.
Others who can get tax discounts are low income seniors over the age of 65 who meet the income requirements and live in their own homes (Enhanced Star), as well as low income disabled homeowners living in their own homes. Other homeowners can get Basic Star.
However, to get a reduced rate, taxpayers must qualify and fill out the paperwork.
