NYLON – State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has been arrested on corruption charges.
According to news partner 13WHAM, the speaker arrived at the New York F.B.I. office Thursday morning and was taken into custody. ABC News reports the charges stem from payments the assemblyman allegedly received from a law firm, and that the case stems from Governor Cuomo’s abrupt shutdown of last year’s corruption panel.
Silver has served as Speaker of the Assembly for more than two decades. We have reached out to Silver’s office for comment but have not heard back yet. Thursday morning on Good Day Rochester, Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb called for Silver to step down if arrested, saying he could not serve with a “cloud hanging over his head.”
