SPRINGWATER — Springwater is celebrating its 200th birthday with a year packed with unique events starting in April.
According to a press release from Diane Olson with the Lake Country Weekender, the Town was established by an act of the New York State Legislature on April 17, 1816.
“The Springwater Bicentennial Committee has been hard at work for many months planning numerous activities to honor Springwater’s 200-year history and to create a memorable celebration for the community,” said Diane Olson of The Lake Country Weekender. “These events are scheduled to occur throughout the entire year, all open to the public and most of them free.”
A Valentine Dinner and Dance will take place on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Springwater American Legion Post 905 at 7998 School Street. Doors open at 5 p.m.
This event is a fundraiser for the Springwater Bicentennial. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple, available from members of the Springwater American Legion or Springwater Fire Department.
Come April, Springwater Trails will be hosting a series of nine bicentennial hikes focusing on the history and beauty of Springwater on the third Sunday of each from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come June through August, this will be 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can follow updates on these events at springwatertrails.org.
Founder’s Day, on Sunday, April 17, will be celebrated with several activities at the Springwater Fire Hall at 8145 South Main Street, including an interdenominational worship service from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by a chicken barbecue.
A series of monthly youth activities centered on the topic of ‘Springwater history’ is ongoing through May. Participants from each of two age groups will be eligible to win prizes in a drawing, to be announced at the Springwater Gala in June.
There will be a special dedication ceremony attended by Senator Catharine Young and several other county and state officials.
The Annual Springwater Gala will be a special two-day event this year to celebrate the bicentennial, on Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, at Larry Canute Memorial.
Also on Saturday, June 4, will be the Springwater Bicentennial Arts and Crafts Show and Sale, featuring the works of local artists, at the Springwater Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
