Frozen Ropes lead 5-0 and were cruising to an easy win until Geneseo (12-3) got their first run with three straight singles with one out in the sixth. After a strikeout for the second out, an error pushed across another run to cut the deficit to three. Gillen took advantage of the extra out, doubling in two runs to bring the Thunder within one. John Ridler followed Gillen’s double with a walk, and Mattle connected with a go-ahead, two-run single.
Coach Mark Bennett said that although the Thunder got off to an inauspicious start, he knew his team had the ability to put up a big inning.
“We got big hits when we needed them, and finally shut it down on defense,” he said.
Geneseo’s No. 7 through 10 hitters combined to go 4 for 14 with three runs scored, and Mattle said the team’s ability to generate offense from anywhere in the lineup allowed them to rally for the win.
“I’m confident in everybody up to bat,” he said. “We’re all good hitters, and we all know we’re all good hitters. We knew we could do it – it didn’t matter how the game started.”
Zack Kolodziejski picked up the win on the mound, allowing five runs and striking out six in seven inning.
Mattle and Gillen were aided on offense by Jake Duppgieser, who collected two hits and scored a run, Ridler, who doubled and scored a run, and Tim Jackson, who added an RBI single.
The Thunder will wrap the regular season Thursday at 6:00 p.m. when they take on HFL at Moffitt Field.
