According to a press release from Sheriff Thomas Dougerty, a hard-earned grant from the United States Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has reinstated the role of school resource officer at Kesheaqua Central school after the position was cut from the 2014-2015 school year.
“The Sheriff and I are very excited about getting a Deputy Sheriff back into the Keshequa School District,” said Undersheriff Matthew Bean. “The Deputies assigned to the schools not only protect our children while in school but also become mentors and role models for the students. The Administrative Deputy to the Sheriff, Deputy Gary Miller, did a great job of applying for this Federal grant and stating our case as to why the position was needed. We are one of only three police agencies in New York State to receive a COPS grant award this year. We thank the school administration, school board, the County Administrator, the Board of Supervisors and the community for supporting this great position.”
Deputy Dale started his career with the Sheriff’s Office in early 2014 as a part time Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Road Patrol Division, and just Monday started his new role as Keshequa Central School.
The Sheriff added that the grant is for $125,000, to be used over three years within the Keshequa School District, and mandates that the Keshequa School District will have a Deputy as a Resource Officer for four more years.
