LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Senator Patrick Gallivan issued the following statement in the hours following the shooting and capture of convicted murderer and Clinton Correctional escapee David Sweat on Sunday.
Sweat’s co-conspirator and fellow escapee Richard Matt was fatally shot by law enforcement on Friday.
“I thank the men and women of the New York State Police, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies for their relentless search for escaped convicts Richard Matt and David Sweat. As a former State Trooper and Erie County Sheriff, I have great appreciation for the difficult task these officers faced and I respect their dedication and commitment. Our residents can rest comfortably knowing these dangerous criminals no longer pose a threat to our communities. I am thankful that no law enforcement personnel and no innocent people were injured in the hunt for these individuals.
Now that the search is over, it is important that we move forward with a full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the escape. We most hold those responsible accountable, review existing procedures and policies and consider possible reforms in order to prevent a similar incident in the future.”
