In deference to coronavirus prevention measures, voters in New York State school board elections will be voting this year on school budgets and for school board members by mail. Budget votes and school board elections will be held in New York State June 9.
Those wishing to run for school board election must still submit nominating petitions with the district clerk at least 30 days before the date of the election (May 9), but the usual number of necessary signatures on the petitions has been relaxed. However, age and residency requirements are the same as in previous years for each district. Those who file to be on the ballot will be listed alphabetically on the ballot, which will be sent out to every eligible voter in the district prior to the June 9 budget vote and school board election.
School districts have been ordered by an executive order signed by Governor Cuomo to send every eligible voter a postcard detailing the date of the election, date of budget hearing, definition of qualified voter, and an absentee ballot with a return postage-paid envelope. Budget hearings will be held remotely by a service such as Zoom, and details of the date and time of the budget hearing will be on the postcard sent out by the district.
