AVON — A Rochester-based personal defense training and firearms safety instructor is hoping to open a firing range in the Town Avon as part of their training program.
At Thursday’s Avon Town Board meeting, David Jenkins stated his intentions to the Avon Town Board as he searches for a land parcel to lease explaining that the facility would be used for small firearms training classes and lower caliber rifles.
“I’m not looking for any kind of permanent structures, I’m just looking for an area to train on,” said Jenkins. “We’d be running training classes for pistol, shotgun, and some rifle but no long range stuff or higher caliber rifles. When you get into the .308 and higher caliber rifles they tend to have more report.”
The next step will come when Jenkins finds a parcel and seeks plan approval from the Avon planning and zoning boards.
Jenkins is the founder of Rochester Personal Defense and has a classroom facility near the airport but does not have a firing range at that location.
