GENESEO – A handmade replica of national literary treasure Henry David Thoreau’s cabin is about to undergo a huge leap forward in its construction process this month, as the frame for the structure will soon be set up on the already constructed foundation.
Students in the hands-on college course say that the replica, once finished, will be the most accurate replica to date in the nation, including the one at Walden, Massachusetts on the actual site where Thoreau lived and composed his legendary book of observations and philosophical reflections on nature, Walden also known as Life in the Woods.
“There have been five sections of the class so far,” said Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam, who is currently enrolled in the class along with 26 others. “We have built the foundation and will be ready to put up the frame on the 23rd.”
Several different sections of students have been working on the foundation using manual tools for five semesters, or two and a half years.
The cabin construction site is located near the southern end of campus, near the entrance to the college’s arboretum.
