On Saturday night, Sept. 26, between 11:45 and 11:48 p.m., thieves threw a rock through the glass front door of Wester’s General Store in Conesus, and in three minutes, loaded their vehicle with packs of cigarettes from the cigarette rack, as well as some boxes of cigarettes that had just come in. The theft was caught on videotape. No money or other merchandise was taken.
The same has been happening at several stores around the area. In late August, the Bergen C-store at the corner of Rts 19 and 33 was broken into by the “smash and grab” method at about midnight. Only cigarettes were taken, and store cameras had a picture of the thief loading a pink crate with cigarettes. In the early morning hours of Sept. 8, someone threw a rock through the glass door at Crosby’s in Mendon, and stole cigarettes. Valero in Honeoye Falls was also targeted in the same way. A similar incident occurred Thursday, Sept. 24 in East Avon, next to Exit 9 of 390, where someone threw a rock through a glass door to get in and steal cigarettes.
Each time, the thefts amounted to thousands of dollars, with mostly the name brands taken, and generic cigarettes left behind.
Monroe, Livingston, Genesee, and Ontario County Sheriff’s departments are investigating, and some arrests have been made.
