GENESEO – The date is set for the fifth annual Strollin for the Colon 5K run and walk to benefit the fight against colon cancer.
According to a press release from UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, who will again sponsor the event, the Strollin’ for the Colon 5K Walk/Run will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Village Park on Main Street.
“Awareness of screening for this preventable disease is urgently needed in our region,” said 5K chair Tina Cottone, a gastroenterology nurse at UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital. “This event will help support colon cancer research at the UR Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute, as well as cancer awareness programs through UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the Livingston County Cancer Services Program, and the Cancer Services Program of Monroe County.”
Cottone said that colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and is preventable if detected at an early stage.
Registration for the 5K is $25 per person in advance, $30 on race day. All who register by April 22 will get a free t-shirt. Entrants are invited to collect and submit additional donations.
The event will also feature a kids’ run that will follow the main race, gastroenterology specialists on hand for information and to answer questions, food available to purchase, a silent auction and raffles from 8:30am a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and live music featuring the band Trilogy.
“Many of us have had family and friends who’ve had colon cancer,” said Cottone. “Working in the Gastroenterology Division, we appreciate the value and importance of education and screening and know first-hand that it can help save lives.”
