DANSVILLE — President Barack Obama’s office recognized 41 volunteers at Noyes Hospital for their exceptional devotion and awarded them in the hopes that others will follow their example.
According to a press release from Noyes Hospital, they graciously awarded 100 adult and two young adult volunteers, who have truly become part of the hospital, Noyes Auxiliary, the Board of Directors and Foundation Boards.
“The volunteers at the gift shop are like family to me – they are all supportive of each other through hard times and through joyful times,” said Lent, who has has volunteered with Noyes Spice Box Gift Shop since it opened in 2006. “Being a volunteer is good for people and everyone has different experiences in life that they can contribute as a volunteer.”
Volunteers donated a total of 11,860 hours to the community in 2015, saving Noyes $318,560. Of these, 26 volunteers each served over 250 hours in 2015. The reception, themed ‘Volunteers Giving Time & Touching Hearts, highlighted the lives of three specific volunteers: Bill Griffin, Graham Frazer, and Helen Lent.
Noyes President and CEO Amy Pollard and Chairperson Leslie Cole, Jr. awarded these and other generous volunteers.
Lent lost a husband and daughter and so the opportunity to volunteer at Noyes, using her business experience to help get the new gift shop up and running in 2006, was a blessing to her and a huge help to staff.
Griffin has been the Noyes Chaplain Volunteer Leader for 10 years. As a young man, he suffered an injury while serving in the Army and spent nine months in the hospital, where he noticed that many people did not have any visitors. Later in life, he went through training to become a hospital chaplain. Griffin and his team of seven Chaplain Volunteers provide a spiritual dimension of care and support, ministering to the sick or dying.
Frazer was recognized for donating over 1,000 hours in volunteer time to Noyes. He is a resident of the Dansville community and has been with Noyes Hospital as a volunteer for the past six years. Despite the loss of a daughter to a drunk driver, he chooses to spend his time giving back to the community. The former owner of the local Chrysler dealership, he currently volunteers four or five days a week in the Engineering Department and has also served as a Noyes Board of Directors member for the past 13 years.
The mission of Noyes volunteers is to offer an extra dimension of care and support to patients and their families, visitors and Noyes Hospital Staff. Noyes Volunteers provide assistance in areas such as: Human Resources, E.A.R.S. Lifeline, Physician Services, Gift Shop and Coffee Bar, Chaplain Program, Front Desk, Blood Pressure Clinics, Engineering, Medical Library, Living Healthy workshop facilitators, in-home respite, and the “Noyes Welcome Team” which greets visitors and patients, gives directions, and assists with wheelchairs in patient registration in Geneseo and Dansville.
