LIVINGSTON COUNTY — A pregnant woman who was found to have smuggled illegal contraband into Groveland Correctional Facility has been sentenced in Livingston County Court.
Nakita N. Harris, 31, was visiting an inmate in August 2012 when it was discovered that she had carried in a razor blade. According to DA Greg McCaffrey, the razor was found within a deck of playing cards, which the defendant claimed had fallen into the deck accidentally, after she used it to remove a sticker from her vehicle window.
Ms. Harris appeared with her attorney James Davis, who urged Judge Robert B. Wiggins to consider his client’s familial situation in his sentencing decision. Harris’ children are disabled, and she is currently expecting another child. Judge Wiggins expressed empathy for the defendant but made clear that bringing dangerous contraband into a prison setting is a serious offense that cannot be overlooked.
Harris received nine months in the Livingston County Jail.
