FROM: Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes
As fellow Second Amendment advocates, I am enlisting your support in sharing and promoting a
petition to allow high school students to participate in the sporting event of trap shooting. As many of you
are aware, trap shooting is a popular sport among high school student-athletes, particularly in rural

The genesis of this ban started on July 1, 2022, when New York State Governor Kathy Hochul
signed legislation stating firearms could not be carried in “sensitive locations.” These “sensitive
locations” include all sporting events.
During debate on this legislation, the Assembly sponsor, Assembly Member Dinowitz, was asked
about high school trap shooting competitions at sportsman’s clubs. He said that this would be covered
under the “sensitive location” definition.
This means that it would be illegal for anyone, including high school trap team competitors, to
possess any firearm, rifle or shotguns, at sportsman’s clubs.
If you believe high school trap teams should be allowed to compete in the sporting event of trap
shooting, please SHARE (and sign) this petition with your constituents which will be sent to Governor
Hochul. The law is scheduled to go into effect on September 1, 2022. Now is the time to fight for our
high school student-athletes.
As always, thank you for your support and consideration.
