NYLON – New York State law enforcement is now on high alert following the escape of two convicted murderers and escape from a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border.
According to news partner 13WHAM, Governor Andrew Cuomo says Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, used power tools to cut through steel walls at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, and are “dangerous individuals” who escaped through an elaborate plot.
Authorities say their absence from the prison was discovered Saturday morning.
Officials are trying to determine where they got the power tools. Cuomo spoke Saturday at the Clinton Correctional Facility after joining law enforcement authorities to trace the men’s escape route.
Sweat is serving a sentence of life without parole in the slaying of a Broome County sheriff’s deputy in 2002.
Matt is serving 25 years to life beating a man to death in 1997.
Anyone who believes they may have seen these two men is urged to call 911 immediately.
