More than 1,700 nursing home deaths not previously reported are being added to the number of deaths within New York State. This makes nursing home residents accounting for roughly 20 to 25% of the state’s official tally of fatalities.
At least 4,813 residents with confirmed or presumed cases of COVID-19 have died at 351 of New York´s 613 nursing homes since March 1, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration’s new list.
The new additions is because the totals now include people believed to have been killed by the coronavirus before their diagnoses could be confirmed by a lab test.
Sadly, this number is probably larger since it still does not include those nursing home residents who were either sent to hospitals, hospices, or other facilities (including their own home) to die.
