The New York State Education Department announced that they are canceling the U.S. History and Government Regents exam for this year. The exam was scheduled to be given on Wednesday, June 1. A letter was sent to school administrators on May 24, 2022, cancelling the exam.
The same exam is given throughout the state, but for students in the Buffalo area, and family or friends who have experienced loss due to shootings, it was decided that the exam, which was already developed, field-tested, and printed over the course of the last two years, needed to be dropped so as not to cause additional trauma in light of the context of recent racially motivated shootings.
Students will be exempted from having successfully completed the U.S. History Regents exam as a graduation requirement. However, teachers of the course may construct their own local exams and use class averages as a determinant of passing or failing the course for the year.
All other Regents exams will still be held, with the English and Biology exams scheduled for Wednesday, June 15; Algebra I and Chemistry on Thursday, June 16; Global History and Earth Science on Friday, June 17, The following week, there are no exams on June 20 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. On Tuesday, June 21, the Geometry exam will be held; on Wednesday, June 22, the Algebra II exam will be held, and the last day of Regents exams is Thursday, June 23, when the Physics Regents exam will be held.
