– Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a New York City resident on DWAI and Felony AUO charges following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
On July 5th, 2022 at approximately 4:30pm Deputy Gordon Truax, who was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Operation Safe Interstate, conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Interstate 390 for a violation of Vehicle and Traffic Law, after responding to a citizen complaint of an erratic driver.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Yuriy O. Amirov, age 31 from Brooklyn, NY. During the encounter, the Deputy Sheriff suspected that Amirov was under the influence of something other than alcohol, which prompted a Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs investigation. The Deputy Sheriff did conduct a DWI investigation which included the performance of standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the roadside investigation, Amirov was taken into custody for DWAI Drugs.
Amirov was then transported to the Sheriff’s Office sub-station in Lakeville where Deputy Michael Phillips, a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), conducted a drug evaluation. It was the Deputy’s expert opinion that Amirov was under the influence of a Narcotic Analgesic and a CNS Stimulant and that he could not operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
A records check revealed that Amirov’s driving privilege in New York State was revoked with a total of 18 suspensions or revocations, including 15 scoffs of 5 separate dates and one of which was for refusing to submit to a chemical test, making this arrest a Felony.
Amirov was arrested and charged with felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs(combination of drugs), as well as several additional violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Amirov was transported and turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing. The District Attorney’s Office was contacted in regards to bail, however the offenses did not qualify under the NYS Justice Reform Act. As a result, Amirov was released on an appearance ticket to answer the charges at a later date.
