NYS has announced that in order to properly maintain its bridges in a safe and cost-effective manner, the New York State Bridge Authority must raise tolls at its five Hudson River crossings for the first time since 2012. The new toll structure will primarily go to finance the re-decking of the north span of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the Authority’s busiest span and an important connector in the Northeast highway network. The roughly $90 million project will be awarded in 2020 and provide local jobs for three years. The tolls collected will also help fund a number of other projects in the Authority’s $243 million five-year capital plan.
The additional toll revenue used to maintain the Authority’s bridges will stay within the Mid-Hudson Region, funding work on the Bear Mountain, Newburgh-Beacon, Mid-Hudson, Kingston-Rhinecliff, Rip Van Winkle and Walkway Over the Hudson bridges.
Following a lengthy planning and review process, our new toll revision will be phased in over the course of four years, starting annually on May 1, 2020. Full rates will be in place by May 1, 2023. Passenger cars with E-ZPass, which make up the majority of our patrons, will see a toll increase of $0.10 a year over those four years.
The new toll schedule can be found here.
