CONESUS– A new boater education program aims to reduce the spread of invasive species into the Conesus Lake watershed. Instructors, or “stewards,” at the Conesus Lake Boat Launch are inspecting boats for invasive species coming to or from Conesus Lake.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension, Conesus Lake Association and Conesus Lake Watershed Council launched this Watercraft Steward Program to teach more boaters to identify aquatic invasive species, and to clean, drain, and dry their boats between trips. Incidentally, the program coincides with new conservation bills that are gaining momentum in Albany this week.
“Boaters at the launch have been very cooperative about getting their boats inspected and discussing the risks behind transporting invasive species between bodies of water,” said steward Ana Deats. “Many are interested and are actually assisting in removing any plants from their boat and trailers.”
The invasive species control program is set to continue through the rest of the summer. Anyone can contact Mark Wittmeyer at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Livingston County at 585-991-5420, or 585-335-1752 for more information.
