LIVONIA – No worries, Shoreless Acres’ porch is still guarded by the huge elk antlers, little ducks and a lobster trap. Through the door are the barrels of candy, and pictures of lake kids with their catches of the day are still pinned by the door.
But the heart of the place is new. Laurie LaFountain-Nielsen, known to her nine grandkids as ‘Meme,’ is devoting each section of the store to a special grandchild.
“We’re going to hang a placque that says, ‘my greatest blessings call me ‘Meme,'” said LaFountain-Nielsen. “I want each grandchild to have a section of the store.”
The sections are McKaleigh’s Maps, Kristiana’s Crawlers, Tacoma’s Tackle, Isaac’s Images, Cash Out Here, Emerson’s Good Eats, Olivia’s Donuts, Gavin’s Games and Quinley’s Quotes.
The store retains much of the character that has built over the years since Don ‘Smitty’ and Susan Defay opened it in 1983. Isaac’s Images will be where local kids and grownup kids can hang pictures of their catches and mark down where on Conesus Lake they caught the fish.
Crawlers are live bait for anglers, ‘Cash Out Here’ is the ATM, and Emerson’s Good Eats is the expanded kitchen that serves daily breakfast sandwiches, pulled pork, sandwiches and soup.
The refurbishing of the store and everything in it was a family affair. For weeks, LaFountain-Nielsen and family went over every inch of the store, its merchandise and its taxidermy to get all in ship-shape before opening over the weekend.
LaFountain-Nielsen welcomes customers from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 5006 East Lake Road in Livonia.
