Mikala’s Quilting is a business in Geneseo owned by Shelly and Mike Schmatz. Mikala’s Quilting is a unique shop located at 4500 Millennium Drive in Geneseo. If you quilt or want to learn, this is the shop for you.
Mike and Shelly are the New York Dealer for Long Arm Quilting Machines. Shelly sells the Long Arm Machines and trains customers how to use them. Mike assembles and installs the new machines and services them. Many quilters find it challenging to machine stitch a large quilt with a regular sewing machine. The Long Arm makes it easy to machine quilt. It is basically an oversized sewing machine. You can hand guide the machine using the two handles and control the machine yourself. You can attend a class to learn how to operate the machine. After, you can pay a fee to use the Long Arm Machine and do your own quilting. If you prefer, bring in your quilt top and Shelly will sew it for you. She has over 900 patterns on a computer that can guide the machine robotically as well.
If you have ever wanted to try quilting, take advantage of the various classes offered: Beginner’s Quilting, Fabric Weaving, Wool Applique, Paper Piecing, and Block of the Month. Shelly plans on branching out to teach scrapbooking, knitting and crochet classes. You can attend a UFO class two evenings a month. (UFO is the catchy name for unfinished objects) Bring a friend or make some new friends while finishing that project. Classes are offered during the day, evenings and occasionally Saturdays.
Mikala’s Quilting will be starting to work with Girl Scouts. More programs for children will be added. Shelly’s Mother-in-law, Ruth and Linda Coats also teaches quilting.
Mikala’s Quilting is open from 9:00-4:30 Monday- Friday and other times by appointment.
