LIVONIA – Unofficial election results for the Village Mayoral race are that 19-year mayor Cal Lathan (I) has secured another victory over last-minute write-in candidate Andy Mayo, who stirred up a major turnout of write-in voters, the biggest the history of the Village of Livonia and possibly of any Village in Livingston County.
The unofficial tally is Lathan 117, Mayo 94, with a difference of just 23 votes but nonetheless a victory for Mayor Lathan, who has successfully held the office since 1996.
“I’m disappointed, obviously,” said Mayo. “But I think the voter turnout for a last minute write-in is a clear message that the people want change. Mayor Lathan may have pulled off the victory, but the people want change. ”
Mayo thanked his supporters and his wife and says he took on his last-minute political campaign because of apparent issues between municipal services between the Village and Town.
“The village tax levy is far too high,” said Mayo. “Instead of looking for ways to reduce taxes, the Mayor passed a budget last year to override the tax cap. That kind of spending is unwarranted, unnecessary, and irresponsible. We should be looking at our services and finding ways to still provide them in a more cost effective manner. It doesn’t make any sense for Town snowplows to pick up their plows over the Village and put them back down in the Town.”
