A domestic rabbit named Blue being held in a cage outside with no bedding and no protection from the weather froze to death on Dec. 8, says the Ontario County Humane Society. The rabbit was autopsied by a veterinarian to determine the cause of death, and as a result, Fletcher Carter, 37, was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
The cruelty was reported to authorities who were supposed to check on the welfare of the animal. When interviewed by authorities, neighbors reported the animal was still alive on Dec. 7, but when checked on by authorities on December 8 , it was in the cage. It had been snowing and windy, and lows in early December were around freezing.
The Gulick Rd. man was issued an appearance ticket to appear in South Bristol court at a later date.
The Ontario County Humane Society reminds people not to leave animals outside in cold temperatures, especially when in cages or tied to doghouses where they can’t seek warmer shelter. According to a spokesperson from the animal shelter, “If you believe an animal is at risk, contact this office at 585-396-4590 or your local law enforcement agency,”
