GENESEO – SUNY Geneseo’s men and women’s soccer teams played the first official games on Tuesday in the college’s new stadium to a large and loud crowd, ushering in a new era for college’s athletic program.
According to a press release from SUNY Geneseo, both teams won in grand style with the women defeating Alfred 7 – 0 in the afternoon and the men upending the University of Rochester under the lights 1 – 0.
“Our new stadium is something we have looked forward to with great anticipation, and to see the first games played in it was a very special moment for all of us,” said Mike Mooney, Geneseo Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Having the stadium is going to have a great impact on moving our athletic programs forward by serving current student-athletes and attracting top student-athletes and other prospective students considering Geneseo.”
The 2,000-seat stadium is located across the street from the Myrtle A. Merritt Athletic Center in the space formerly occupied by the Holcomb Building.
It includes two fields, scoreboards, a press box building, an athletic support building with team rooms and showers as well as public restrooms and concession stands.
The two synthetic fields are allowing students to practice, train and compete on a quality surface, no matter what the New York weather brings.
In addition to soccer, the two fields will support men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s field hockey and intramural programs.
