CONESUS — The possible rebirth of Long Point Park on Conesus Lake stirred the hearts and minds of supporters last week as the Tourism committee updated elected officials during a Town Board Meeting.
Rumors have been spreading on potential options with the former legendary amusement park that closed after it was severely damaged in a fire in 1988. Currently the Town of Geneseo maintains the park where they have a small beach, gazebo, and picnic area. At one point during their conversation, the Town Board launched into a discussion about the revival of Long Point Park, and how to improve marketing efforts for the project.
“What can I say? Without a doubt, something that’s true for everyone in this room, is that we love Geneseo”,said Katherine FitzSimmons of the Geneseo Tourism Committee. “Success breeds success and we’re on our way.”
Long Point Park was at one time a legendary East Coast tourism hotspot, with generations of families enjoying it since the 1950’s. According to a blog by the most recent private owner’s son, Stephen LaGrou, a catastrophic fire in 1988 led to the park’s closing and sale to the Town of Geneseo in 1990. With plans to revitalize the park now gaining more and more momentum, longtime community members are looking forward to Long Point’s rebirth.
“We need to bump up the park,” said Will Wadsworth, Town Supervisor for Geneseo.
